Why NASC Standards are important.
Every year, Browne’s undergoes an independent audit to maintain our membership of the National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC).
And every year, somebody asks the same question.
“Is it really worth it?”
The short answer is yes.
In fact, we would argue it matters now more than ever.
The scaffolding industry has evolved significantly over the last twenty years. Projects are larger, programmes are tighter and client expectations continue to increase. At the same time, our industry faces a well-documented skills shortage, with NASC highlighting the scale of the challenge facing the sector over the coming years. Through initiatives such as the NASC Work Experience Pledge, the launch of dedicated careers platforms and renewed focus on apprenticeship pathways, the organisation is actively helping attract the next generation into the industry.
Against that backdrop, maintaining standards is not a nice-to-have. It is essential.
For Browne’s, NASC membership has never been about hanging a certificate on the wall. It is about accountability. The audit process examines how we operate as a business, how we manage safety, how we train our people and how we demonstrate competence. It requires evidence, consistency and continual improvement.
Most importantly, it gives clients confidence.
Confidence that the contractor arriving on site has been independently assessed. Confidence that training is taken seriously. Confidence that safety is embedded into the culture of the business rather than simply discussed during inductions.
At Browne’s, our approach has always been simple: Collaborate, Care and Deliver.
We collaborate with clients, principal contractors and supply chain partners to find the safest and most effective solutions. We care about our people, our customers and the standards we uphold. Ultimately, we deliver projects safely, professionally and efficiently.
NASC membership supports every one of those values. It provides a framework that helps ensure good intentions are backed by competent people, robust processes and independent verification.
We are particularly encouraged by the work NASC is undertaking to support the future of the industry. Through apprenticeship promotion, careers outreach, work experience initiatives and collaboration with training providers, the organisation is helping present scaffolding as the skilled, professional career it truly is. Recent initiatives include a commitment to deliver thousands of work experience opportunities, support for apprenticeship development and investment in careers platforms that showcase the diverse opportunities available within our sector.
At Browne’s, this resonates strongly.
Our own apprenticeship programme continues to grow because we know the future of the industry depends on investing in people. Today’s apprentice is tomorrow’s Advanced Scaffolder, Supervisor, Inspector, Designer or Director.
That is why we support organisations that are actively raising standards rather than simply talking about them.
A special thank you must go to our HSEQ Director, Gordon Davies, whose diligence and attention to detail help ensure Browne’s remains audit-ready throughout the year. Successful audits are never achieved in a single week. They are the result of thousands of decisions made correctly across hundreds of projects.
Thanks also to every member of the Browne’s team whose professionalism contributes to maintaining those standards day after day.
The certificate itself is important.
What matters far more is what it represents.
Professionalism. Accountability. Delivery.
The certificate reflects far more than compliance. It demonstrates a commitment to collaborating effectively, caring about standards and delivering the outcomes our clients expect.
In an industry where anyone can claim to meet a standard, independent verification still matters.
And that is why, for Browne’s, it has to be NASC.
