Scaffolding Safety Guide 2026
What every homeowner needs to know about scaffolding safety — from NASC-accredited experts.
1. Always Use a Licensed Contractor
The single most important safety decision is choosing the right contractor. Look for:
- NASC membership — the highest industry standards
- CISRS-trained operatives — properly qualified workers
- Public liability insurance — minimum £5m for domestic work
- Written RAMS — provided before work begins
2. What Safe Scaffolding Looks Like
- Base plates and sole boards on every upright
- Secure ties connecting scaffold to the building
- Guard rails and toe boards on every platform
- Level, secure, damage-free scaffold boards
- Safe ladder access at each level
- Inspection tag showing last inspection date
3. The Inspection Regime
By law, scaffolding must be inspected before first use, every 7 days, and after any event that could affect stability (high winds, heavy rain, impact).
4. Do’s and Don’ts
Do: Ask to see NASC certificates and insurance. Request RAMS. Report any damage immediately.
Don’t: Climb the scaffolding yourself. Allow children near it. Remove any components. Hang heavy items from it.
